I was lucky enough to know both Frans’s work and the person himself – a truly genius photographer and a wonderful man. So missed. His eyes were always scanning for the next shot or who he needed to talk to about fixing stuff, but he’d leave his camera for a minute or two and say ” I’ll be back.” I’m just one of so many people around the world who had huge respect for both the talent – and even more – the person behind it. Lucky to have know nFrans, even luckier to have been able to call him a good friend.

Back in early ’78 I was assigned to Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) El Toro, CA, Marine Aviation Weapons Training Unit Pacific, the precursor unit to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1 (MAWTS-1). I was charged with developing the Aviation Command and Control (AC2) core curriculum that was used in the first Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) course that convened in the Summer of ’78 at MCAS Yuma AZ. During this first WTI, I taught AC2 classes and also participated in numerous operational scenarios. Plus, I am a MAWTS-1 “Plank Owner” = assigned to the squadron when it was first commissioned.
You did a nice job with the article – pixs, however, you missed making a KEY point at the beginning. The KEY point that was missing, is the fact that there are numerous non-aviator Military Occupational Specialities (MOS) partcipating in – playing an integral role in each and every WTI course.
As an example, in the Summer of ’78 at the first WTI, I was the Marine Corps first Aviation Command and Control Officer to participate.
