Vintage AirVenture Adventure 2018

This article was first run in our sister digital aviation magazine CivilAviationWorld.com

The 2018 EAA AirVenture Oshkosh attracted hundreds of “old” airplanes; many gravitated towards the EAA’s Vintage Aircraft Association, located just south of the Boeing Plaza on the AirVenture grounds. The Vintage Aircraft Association has three categories of older aircraft models, namely “antique”, “classic” and “contemporary”… for judging purposes. Many names from aviation’s Golden Age era, that time between the end of Wold War I and the beginning of World War II, were well represented. Those companies which produced aircraft after the end of the Second World War were present in large quantities too. Do these names sound familiar? Cessna, Beech, Piper, WACO, Fairchild, Culver, Mooney, Aeronca, Curtiss Wright, DeHavilland Canada, and Stinson and Spartan? Those are just some of the manufacturers which were represented in 2018.

Instead of detailing all of the attendees at AirVenture, I’ll offer this photo scrapbook of vintage aircraft from the first three days of AirVenture (the beginning three days of the show which I was able to attend), you can open each photo or hover over a thumbnail to check the aircraft’s make and model. Bear in mind, every one of these aircraft are at least fifty years old – that’s half a century! Kudos to the owners and operators for their caring of these important relics of aviation history.

My passion for all things aviation began at a very early age, and I coupled this with my interest of photography during college in the late 1970s. I spent 32 years in the air traffic control industry, and concurrently, enjoyed my aviation photography and writing adventures, which continue today. I've been quite fortunate to have been mentored by some generous and gifted individuals. I enjoy contributing to this great site, and working with some very knowledgeable and equally passionate aviation followers.
