The Flying Colors of Oshkosh – EAA AirVenture 2023 Hues

MOONEY

When you have around 10,000 airplanes to compare color schemes against each other, it is without a doubt difficult to pick a favorite. At the EAA’s AirVenture 2023, that’s about how many planes flew in and out of Oshkosh’s airport this year.

I was walking out of the grounds at the end of a long day when I happened upon a photo shoot in front of a VERY colorful Mooney – called the “Mooney Anomoly”. Owner Liam told me that it’s a refurbished 1967 Mooney M20F, with loads of upgrades – engine, lighting, interior cabin comfort, avionics and electrical system. These upgrades I couldn’t see. What I did see was the wonderful paint scheme… the owner had asked a mural painter Matt Kress to devise and complete the external paint scheme, and gave him free reign to produce something special. He sure did, with some 45 different hues and many feet of masking tape later! Personally, if there is one color scheme on the field (that I saw out of 10,000), this is my favorite.

Here’s a very small slice of the colorful sights we got to see this year – hover over the photo to see what type it is and click on a photo for an enlarged view.

Assignment and Content Editor, writer and photographer A New Englander all of my life, I've lived in New Hampshire since 1981. My passion for all things aviation began at a very early age, and I coupled this with my interest of photography during college in the late 1970s. I spent 35 years in the air traffic control industry, and concurrently, enjoyed my aviation photography and writing adventures, which continue today. I've been quite fortunate to have been mentored by some generous and gifted individuals. I enjoy contributing to this great site and working with some very knowledgeable and equally passionate aviation followers.
