Aggressor Squadron Nellis AFB (64th and 65th AGRS)

F-15D 85-0131 in memorial Lt. Col. Thomas Bouley.
The two Aggressor Squadrons belong to the 57th Wing at Nellis Air Force Base. The 64th Aggressor Squadron (AGRS) was activated at Nellis in 1972. At that time, the Squadron was equipped with the T-38A Talon and in April 1976 it received the F-5E Tiger II. This light fighter was chosen, as its size and flight characteristics were nearly similar to the standard aircraft of the Warsaw Pact, the MiG-21 Fishbed. With the following years rose more and more structural problems withe the F-5 and in April 1988 the unit changed to the more capable F-16C Fighting Falcon. The Squadron received the Tailcode “WA” like its parent Wing. The Squadron was deactivated in 1990 but reactivated in 2003. Nowadays, the 64th AGRS operates 24 F-16Cs. The aircraft carry Russian style red codes at the intake and are painted in various blue/grey; green/brown; brown or black/grey/white colors.
The 65th Aggressor Squadron was activated in October 1975 at Nellis AFB, and also flew the F-5E Tiger II until its disbandment in April 1989. In September 2005 it was decided to reactivate the 65th AGRS with the F-15C/D. Like the 64th AGRS, the Eagles were painted in different Russian style blue/gray or brown camouflage, but the Eagles got blue number codes at their intakes. However, due to budgetary cuts, the squadron was disbanded on 26th September 2014; half a dozen Eagles remained active with the 64th AGRS until April 2015.
Aggressor Squadrons in the United States use the tactics, technics and procedures of an expected adversary to perform a realistic simulation of an anticipated air fight. This opposes the more common dogfights against their own aircraft type, often flown by pilots from the same squadron. At Nellis AFB, the assets of the Aggressor Squadrons are organized and receive their tasks from the 414th Combat Training Squadron (CTS), which organizes the large scale exercises like Red Flag at Nellis AFB.
