The EAA AirVenture Oshkosh has an array of different airfields and landing areas on its grounds for various uses and themes. A few miles away from the main airport is the Seaplane Base. Then, there are the three main runways (one being a taxiway during the non-airshow months) and the Pioneer Airport near the EAA Museum. Last but not least of all, there’s… “Flying for fun is the name of the game down at the Fun Fly Zone, a 900-foot grass runway adjacent to the Ultralight Barn. Morning and evening flight operations have been a signature event and one of AirVenture’s best kept secrets at the Fun Fly Zone. Aviation enthusiasts can see ultralights, powered parachutes, weight shift trikes, homebuilt helicopters, and gyroplanes demonstrating “low and slow” flying.” according to the official EAA description of the runway and area adjacent to it.
The Fun Fly Zone is home to the Twilight Flight Fest STOL demonstrations, balloon launches and Radio Control aircraft exhibitions too.
Anne Taylor spent some time at the Fun Fly Zone and captured some of the sights in the photo gallery seen here. If you’re not up on Light Sport and Ultralight aircraft types, here’s a great beginning primer of these diminutive aircraft… Light Sport Aircraft in the U. S. are limited to 1,320 pounds (or 1,430 pounds for seaplanes), a maximum stall speed of 45 knots, a maximum speed of 140 miles per hour, requires a Sport Pilots Liscence and has only one or two seats. Ultralights in the U. S. weigh less than 254 pounds empty, a top speed of 63 miles oper hour, and no license is needed.
